Results-Driven Job Search 2.0 Strategies
Tips for the Unemployed and Underemployed

There are three major job search strategies every candidate should employ to attract recruiters and hiring managers in today’s increasingly competitive job market.

Strategy #1: Add value to your resume.

  • Focus on ROI and positive results on your resume to standout and distinguish yourself from other candidates. Each bullet on your resume should end with a positive result directly linked to the company’s bottom line of increasing revenue or decreasing cost.

  • Write a brief summary about each company on your resume, even if the companies you have worked for are well known. Understanding a company’s purpose helps recruiters further understand the value of your role at the company.

Strategy #2: Use search engine optimization strategies.

  • Add a keywords section to your resume to highlight skills and phrases a recruiter may use to find someone for the job posting.  Appearing in keyword search results is the first step to being considered for a job.  Remember, if recruiters cannot find you, they cannot interview you.

  • Create a customized keywords section for each online application to ensure you have the terms most likely to be used to find candidates for the role.

Strategy #3: Focus on developing your networking and communication skills to improve your chances of securing an interview and landing the job.

  • After applying for a position online, use business networking websites to find and contact the recruiter for the position.  Recruiters are currently receiving more resumes per job posting than ever.  Reaching out to them directly will help you stand out and get to the top of the resume pile.

  • In your "Thank You" letter following an interview, be sure to: Thank the interviewer for their time; State the three reasons why you’re a great candidate for the job; and ask what the next steps will be. Send the letter within 24-hours following a job interview to express your continued interest in the position and demonstrate your ability to follow through on projects.
